Why?

Why do I even try? When will I learn to not get involved in these totally futile and infuriating "Why do you write slash?" discussions? We calmly and reasonably try to explain our point of view and it hits that brick wall of willful misunderstanding and condescension. We get is "But it's all porn" (no) "They're not gay on the show" (they're also not married or with kids or retired or timeshifted to the present on the show -- does that stop people from writing fanfic? Where're the attacks on them?) and the best of all, that snide, superior "WHY are you so defensive?" (try NOT being defensive when someone attacks you). Futile, futile...
Hm. Nope. don't feel better yet. Grrr... this is why I hate Net "communication." I want to be face to face with these people and explain without interference the many logical fallacies they're wallowing in in their arrogance.

[livejournal.com profile] sithdrgn offered a wonderfully reasonable, rational, entirely civilized response. It should have ended there.

I have to say, even I'm getting tired of such questions and they're not even aimed at me.

Yes, she did.
I liked Marian's response even better. Honestly, we don't nag at gen fans about why they like gen, then say "Hey! Why're you so defensive?" For some reason "I see the potential there" isn't a sufficient answer -- that's when it degenerates, because I think the question is not being honestly asked. I really think the veiled hostility gets unveiled when the conversation goes on a while. There IS no "acceptable" explanation when a person is determined to not see (and to be derogatory). A person who just doesn't see will always simply say that, without any insulting codicils.
