My real answers to the personality test

Because I just hate the way they break things down:

1. You tend to:
o Think first and then act
o Act first - then think about what you did
Usually a

2. It's Friday night and your friend just canceled on you. You:
o Spend some quiet time alone instead
o Find new friends to hang out with
It depends on my mood - I might be relieved not to have to go out, or I might go out alone, or I might do something else

3. You are more likely to say that:
o Other people motivate and inspire you
o You tend to find your motivation an inspiration from within
This one is black and white - the answer is b

4. You prefer to interact:
o In one-on-one situations
o In all sorts of social situations
Depends; I like small groups of smart people best of all

5. You are:
o Easy to get to know
o Hard to read
I'm extremely easy to read in that I am always straightforward and honest, although I'm also extremely private with no fear of remaining silent if I don't wish to share something; I don't think people get to know me very easily, but I could be wrong, since I'm not in their heads

6. You have:
o A few people who are very dear to you
o A ton of friends, acquaintances, and people you know
Another black and white one - a

7. What would make you more nervous?
o A one on one job interview
o A group job interview
It would entirely depend on the kind of interview. Either would probably make me a little nervous if I needed the job

8. You ideal Saturday night is:
o Peaceful
o Stimulating
Wholly dependent on my mood (see question 2). Could be a book, could be sleep, could be sex, drugs, rock and roll

9. Your friends are annoying you. You:
o Keep it to yourself
o Let them know
Depends on whether it's something important or not

10. At a party you:
o Wait to be approached
o Approach a group of strangers
Entirely depends on the nature of the party and the behavior of the strangers. If they seem interesting, I would approach them. "Wait to be approached" sounds like I expect people to pay court to me - that's dead wrong

11. You think more about:
o The future
o The present
I don't think "more" about either one; I think about all three (past too) and I've never done the math on how it falls out

12. When faced with a problem, what do you use to solve it?
o Creativity and new ideas
o Common sense and a step by step approach
Both - I don't shut off any angles that might work

13. You are more likely to remember:
o Someone's face
o Someone's name
Used to be I'd remember both; these days, faces

14. You would describe your style as:
o Enthusiastic
o Matter of fact
Another black and white one - b

15. When deciding on something important, you:
o Look at every fact possible
o Go with your gut
Both, in varying percentages depending on the issue. I don't know that I've ever decided anything based wholly on one or the other

16. You rather work on something that is:
o Novel and new
o Familiar and tested
I "rather" work on something that's been edited. :-) That said, it entirely depends on my mood; I'm comfortable with tested things and comfortable trying new things; I'm not afraid to fail or mess up (as I think happens to a lot of us as we grow up)

17. The best way to get something done is through:
o Hard work
o Inspiration
Depends on the thing. Not much inspiration involved in, say, dishwashing; but most tasks can easily involve both

18. You would rather study
o How something is put together
o A new philosophy or religion
Well, sheesh, this wholly depends on what the thing is, and my mood. I enjoy both very much

19. When explaining something difficult to understand, you:
o Give as many details as possible
o Use metaphors and analogies
Entirely depends on the person I'm explaining to - everyone learns differently. I try to employ whatever approach seems to work for them

20. Driving home from work or school, you:
o Vary your route, just for fun
o Almost always take the same route
The answer is a, but barely

21. Your decisions are more likely to be rooted in:
o Facts and logic
o Emotions and feelings
Again, I don't know that I've ever decided anything without using both

22. You would rather be:
o A lawyer
o A teacher
Neither one, and I'm not sure what sort of choice that is

23. When making a decision in a group, you:
o Prefer to decide on something everyone is comfortable with
o Are able to reach a decision without consulting others
"Prefer" and "Are able" suggest one's a choice and one a default. I'm perfectly able to decide things on my own, and if it's a group issue I naturally would like to please everyone in the group. The two are in no way mutually exclusive. I might easily make a decision on my own with the goal of pleasing everyone

24. You think conflict is:
o Hard for you to deal with
o A normal part of relationships
Another weird dichotomy. Conflict is loathsome to me; it's also a normal part of relationships and I think I handle it reasonably well

25. In an argument, someone can win you over if they present their case:
o Reasonably
o Sincerely
Neither. They can "win me over" if they're presenting facts which I'm not aware of or which contradict misinformation. When it comes to opinions, other people don't change mine - I change them, when they change, and it's usually due to a combination of facts and feelings (mine)

26. When it comes to people's birthdays, you:
o Remember and celebrate them
o Always forget them
Neither. I generally remember but rarely "celebrate"

27. You tend to:
o Give people the benefit of the doubt
o Hold people to high standards
I try to do a

28. You would rather be:
o Appreciated
o Accomplished
Neither. I'd rather be happy

29. Two of your close friends are fighting. You would approach each of them:
o Diplomatically
o Truthfully
What - these two are now mutually exclusive? Both - duh

30. What do you value more?
o Empathy, harmony and forgiving
o Logic, justice and fairness
Is this a trick question? I value them all, each at a different level depending on the particular situation. There's never a time I don't value them, when I would say, for instance, "Oh, fairness doesn't matter here."

31. You have a big trip coming up. You:
o Take several days to prepare and pack
o Do everything at the last minute
A black and white one - a

32. You are the type of person who:
o Tends to focus on one task at a time
o Has a gazillion windows open on your computer
Usually a, but depends

33. You've got a big project for work coming up. You:
o Get it done as soon as possible
o Get it done whenever you feel like it
Black and white (I come from a deadline business) - a

34. You:
o Think every decision out carefully
o Make decisions on the fly
It depends on the decision and my mood

35. Do you prefer:
o Breaking all the rules
o Rules and structure
Again, false dichotomy. I prefer rules that make sense to me; if they don't make sense, I have a hard time respecting them. I also am not of that ilk that needs to break rules just because they exist. I don't "prefer" mindless chaos, but I don't "prefer" a mindless dictatorship either

36. If someone's in charge:
o Whatever. You don't care.
o You tend to listen to them.
If someone's in charge of me - a boss - I listen because by taking the job I've agreed to listen to them. I'm never quite sure what questions like this are really asking - do I respect a title for its own sake, or suck up? No; do I treat my bosses professionally? Yes

37. When it comes down to it, life is:
o Very complicated
o Very simple
Both, either - depends

38. You tend to:
o Resist change
o Adapt well to change
Depends. I resist bad changes; I welcome good changes

39. Your desk is:
o Organized
o A total mess
Black and white - a

40. In your opinion, the best parties and dates are:
o Planned
o Spontaneous
Entirely depends - I've had great times, and lousy times, at both sorts; it depends on the people there and my own mood

Thank you. I couldn't do this test either because the choices in many cases are ridiculous or not choices at all. In fact, the only one that was black and white for me was that I like to vary my route back home!

I don't know who wrote this test, but my guess is it's completely non-scientific.

I know these are really for fun, but most of the people I know, and those on my flist, are older, educated, thinking women - these answers all seem to presuppose that life is a series of knee-jerk, extremist reactions. I don't know anyone who doesn't think about things, who doesn't see shades of grey in life's decisions and in other people (and in themselves). It's a little annoying because I find myself thinking "Who is it who encapsulates human nature into these sorts of black/white categories? No one I know is this simple, and if there are people out there who really believe people are this simple, I hope they stick to creating online games and don't get involved in anything important!"

A or B

I took the test and had a lot of trouble deciding on answers--teacher or lawyer?--yikes! I'd also like to be appreciated for my accomplishments, but you're right, happy would be better. There were few black and white answers for me but, like Shay, I do vary my routes home and unlike you I keep a bunch of windows on my computer open. I also read a bunch of books at the same time. My result came out "idealist" and was general enough to make sense though I also think if I took the test a few months from now my result would be different.

I took it twice while trying each time to answer as honestly as I could given how lousy the questions are and I got two different answers! And this was within about 5 minutes. :-) I have no idea what that supposedly says about me - I think it means the questions are really lousy.
