Day 14 – Ratings – how high are you comfortable with going? Have you ever written higher? If you're comfortable with NC-17, have you ever been shocked by finding that the story you're writing is G-rated instead?
I’ve written reasonably graphic sex (though I’ve read coarser ways of writing it than I would want to do, but I’m not sure whether that makes them more graphic). I assume that’s NC-17, though I don’t purport to know what the ratings really mean. I have found that with the vague intent to write a graphic story, the story itself has gone no further than a kiss or thereabouts. The story decides for itself (that’s why I say “vague” intent – I don’t often sit down planning to write a sex story. I sit down with a plot idea in mind, not a rating).

When writing, the story really does set the tone for me, too. And in reading, a long, involved sex scene, no matter how hot, can be jarring if the action doesn't logically follow the plot line.

Yes. I know, and don't mind, that some sex is kinda expected in slash. But it needs to flow and not just be stuck in there as if it fell there from some other story. I know some of my stories flow better than others, but I've always tried to put the sex in where it belongs, where it makes sense, and where it doesn't feel like ... well, like the notes I put in my stories when I'm working on them:

Blah blah blah story blah ISSH* blah blah blah...

*Insert Sex Scene Here.
