Both of them seem to have very different characters, though the change in Illya's may not be as offensive as the change in Napoleon's. Did you see the 5 min walkthrough vid they showed at ComicCon? Napoleon is just obnoxious, a walking smirk.
I'm not one of those people who's been waiting 50 years for a remake so in one way I don't care, but I reserve the right to grumble ;)
Everything you said. They're fully entitled to rethink the characters - why not? But it's one more motivation for me to stay away. I do get that they mean to be introducing the guys to each other and in theory, through the "franchise," they'll gradually warm to each other somewhat, but it's said in such a nasty tone (yes, he too is a different person). And if they've made Napoleon a cowboy ... how boring. I like that he's a thinking man, a strategist and not someone who just plunges into things like a thug.
Ah, whatever. Like you, this movie isn't made for me anyway, so ...
Edit: Yes, I think I've seen all the previews. There were little moments of fun, but it just looks so generic and so modern (that's Guy Ritchie. All the depth of a sheet of toilet paper).
The 5 minute clip is the one (I assume you don't care about spoilers) where Napoleon, at what I guess is their first official meeting starts by calling Illya's mother a whore--I mean why? I resent that on Napoleon's behalf! It's all so frat boy, has nothing to do with uncle. It made me actively dislike what I was seeing.
Yes - that nasty, childish needling, from two supposedly adult, experienced men who had killed and had seen men die? Really? But, again ... Guy Ritchie. Although he didn't write it on his own. He's taken something special and made it generic. I'm sure plenty of people who've never seen MFU will see it and enjoy it. It has all the cliches, I'm sure, all the stunts du jour.
I honestly don't get the desperate need for remakes among fans. And again, I think this kind of episodic series television that isn't really script driven is among the worst source material for remakes anyway.
I'm always very skeptical of remakes. I'm not opposed (everything that lasts gets reinterpreted and revised and updated), but if I like the original - and especially if I love the original - why on earth would I be keen for a remake?
