...The Rainbow Affair has been posted to File 40 after a year in a zine. It will be interesting to see the response (if any) to the story I consider my best. If it's anything like the response it got whilst in the zine, the silence should be deafening. :)

Cool

I love that story, Lee. I'm sure folk will respond. Hmm. Now I think I better go and read it all over again. How's things? You've been an elusive bunny for the past wee while.

I admit, I've been busy in "the other" fandom. Just finished a couple of stories, though, so I'm kind of recovering, even thinking about working on that MFU/ST crossover for Loretta (sshhh! don't tell her, though!)

I read it last night, until 2 am, and lay there sleepless for another hour afterwards. It's not an easy story, but it's fantastic. You did an amazing job, especially with Napoleon's inner life. Really...wow.

I think the last two pages are some of the (emotionally) tightest and most spare fan writing I've read, and I love the subtlety of the ending. And the fact that there's obviously more to this story than is on the page. Nicely done.

Thanks!

I appreciate the comments. I wasn't so much fishin' (though I have to admit I must've been, at least a little, deep down, eh?) as pensive about the fact that the story I think is the best I've done has resulted in resounding silence, whereas others get a lot of response.
Although 2 people now have said they were unsure exactly what happened at the end. This is my problem; in trying to not overwrite, I can sometimes underwrite. It is a fine line and one that's very important to me. If there's one thing I'm most interested in achieving in my writing (and I'm by no means suggesting I achieve it -- that's why I try!) it's subtlety. My fanfic I don't work at as hard, of course, but I still don't want to be hitting people over the head with feelings and motivation and stuff. That's my goal, and I know I fall short. Rainbow is the fanfic where I felt I fell least short, if y'all know what I mean. This is an example of something we all discussed earlier, I think in Di's LJ -- the difference between the work you think is your best and the work readers seem to like best.

Well, I don't like stories that are in your face; I prefer an ending where you have to think about it for a second before you see what just happened. And yours is so close to almost being lady-and-the-tiger, it's nice.

I do wonder about the fallout, though. *g* Which is good; I don't feel a good story should answer every question.

Hi!

Hi Lee!
I added you to my friends list, hope it's okay?
Haven't read that story you mention here yet, but in general - as a fanfic reader, it's great that stories are posted on the net. I have never read a printed zine in my life, and, living in Norway, I also miss all cons - of course :-)
But I enjoy this community of LJs - a great way of meeting people all over the world - and share interests

I was looking for new things to read today, and I came across this story. I couldn't believe I hadn't read it before! I didn't realize that it had only gone online recently.

It's wonderful. Painful, but wonderful! Your style is so immediate and raw -- I really felt dragged through the emotional wringer with both of them.

*goes to read the rest of your stuff*

What?
