On this Independence Day ... *

I'm saying it here because I'm bursting to say it, not because it hasn't been said, nor because it needs saying by me. Damn it, if you are a fucking ignorant bigot, don't expect not to get shot down for it in a world that is now, finally, stepping out of the dark ages of ignorance and bigotry on a lot of things. There's a difference between not being interested in something and in thinking something, or some kinds of human beings, are somehow subhuman. Free speech and tolerance don't cover you just getting a pass on that offensive bullshit.

* Points for guessing the movie [edit: the movie the song I'm quoting is from, to be clear] in a group that in general is old enough or educated enough to not think a photo of the Challenger exploding is a shot of fireworks, for fuck's sake.

I endorse every single point you're making. People can say whatever the hell they want, but yeah, the rest of us have the right to judge them on it.

And that American Apparel thing. WTF??? Learn to source your photos people!!

I know! My first thought was horror, my second was "but if you're, you know, internet surfing for pics, aren't they usually LABELED???" I find that they are. Then I thought, "OK, born in 1990 or something, doesn't know ..." and then I thought "Yes, but I wasn't alive during the Holocaust and I still know about it. I wasn't around for the Hindenburg disaster but I recognize the photos. It's called an education."

Sheesh.

It also doesn't look anything like fireworks. Grrrr ...

That was my thought too. Has this person never seen fireworks? I looked at the google image fireworks search page out of curiosity, it's not on there. What kind of lazy thinking is involved here? Don't answer that!

Good grief on the American Apparel photo. Birth year has nothing to do with it - way to excuse onself!

On the other - well, I came late to that party but I suspect getting shot down (or at least raising a ruckus) was the whole point, in the OP's self-serving masochistic mindset.

And I come to fandom and LJ to get away from that kind of crap...

On American Apparel: Exactly. It's called an education. This is still fairly recent history. Plus internet pics are generally labeled. No real excuse there.

On the other: Same old story; I don't care if people don't see the guys that way. That's a nonissue. But the innuendo and insults, of authors and fans of slash and of sexual orientation in general, are a problem. I censor no one, but I'm also not going to not say it's a problem.

The thing that makes me want to cry is that there are churches, pastors and ministries in my faith who preach and teach and advocate those same statements.

Fortunately, fewer than there once were (I do believe). I do feel that we as a race (the human one) are improving, slowly but surely.

The only thing that comes to mind is All animals are created equal; it's just that some are more equal than others.

It's okay to not embrace the lifestyle, but people died so that we would have the opportunity for that choice. It's not up to one person or group to make that choice for us.

I'm evil. I'm a tyrant. But I have great cookies...

Yes. I'm not into golf, for instance, or hunting. Nor am I religious. That doesn't mean I think those who are are somehow lesser human beings. They're just different, and that's OK.

Do you do macadamia nut cookies? That's really key.

Exactly, *um* each to his or her own. I would never dream of telling someone how or what to believe and thinking you have that right is egocentric. I hope she has a back up fandom because she's sort of burned her bridges here.

For you, I will make a killer mac nut cookie! Do you want some chocolate to go with the macs?

Well, I object to hunting (except when it's really for food and there is no other way). I don't see much difference between a hunter and a serial killer because I think animals are persons, with rights (and yes, I'm a lawyer, though an odd one and no, I'm not a vegetarian for I admit the humans are predators; what I absolutely condemn is the fact of taking pleasure in killing).

I was really being quite general. Yes, there are absolutely positions others take that are morally reprehensible. That is of course at the core of this current fandom issue. If I hear another homophobe prate about how he or she should have the right to denigrate other human beings for their orientation without being smacked down for the ignorant hateful bigot he or she is, I shall go what we used to call, when people sent letters, postal. I defend others' right to be assholes verbally - as long as they're not actually attacking others in meatspace. I don't recognize that they have any right to not be called out.

That is about the lamest excuse ever. Wasn't born yet? I guess they haven't heard about a little field of study called history.

I know. I realize how old and crotchety I sound, but the excuses we hear for this sort of ignorance are kinda wearin' on me. The internet has unveiled or helped create a staggering new level of ignorance and some of the lamest defenses of that ignorance I've ever experienced. Grammar, spelling, manners, history? We doan need no. We gots da intrawebz. We FAYmuss.
