I have a question

... which I will crosspost for obvious reasons.

What - assuming Starsky and Hutch are working with them on a case and become at least semi-friendly - would Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin call them? Hutch works, but surely not "Starsky"? For those of you familiar with both worlds, what do you think?

Is it possible that Illya, always a bit more reserved and formal -- and as a foreigner, after no matter how many years, carefully observing and following other people's rules -- might use "Starsky" because that's what Hutch uses, and Starsky seems comfortable with?

While Napoleon, ever the rule-breaker of the two, and with far more insouciant self-confidence, would decide at some point to establish his own relationship with Starsky by calling him "David"?

Leaving Illya (on noting that) to either change and follow suit ... or not (given that he is oh-so-slightly stubborn) ...

What a tease! When shall we find out? :D

Oh, I don't know. Wouldn't Illya say "Detective Starsky" and "Detective Hutchinson" if he was being formal? Or even "Mr."? Keeping in mind that the men from UNCLE are about 10 years older, there'd be a certain ... avuncular (har! no pun intended) feeling toward these brash young cops, once they decide they like them. I totally see Napoleon being pretty comfortable with them quickly, as is his wont. :)

Oh - as for finding out. Well, this is a long and plotty sort of story, lots of explosions and gunfire and soirees and stuff, you know? It'll be a while. Sorry. :)

Coming to you late on this, but my first thought was that both Napoleon and Illya would go the formal route (Detective or Sergeant Hutchinson/Starsky, but probably not as formal as Detective Sergeant Whatever). This might, in fact, become a source of irritation to Starsky & Hutch later on, at which point, I believe N & I would honor their preferences, unless, for some reason, they wanted or needed to keep their distance.

I don't read crossovers as a general rule (or even as a slash rule!), but if you're working on one, I'm sure it will be first-rate; I'm eager to see what you do!

You don't think that, as they became friendly (keeping in mind the 10 year age difference) they wouldn't switch to Ken and Dave? I do agree that at first they would address them respectfully by their titles, but ... later? It's hard for me to see Napoleon saying "Starsky, would you mind passing me that detonator?" :) I don't know. Actually, I don't even know what Starsky and Hutch would call Napoleon and Illya! Hm. I probably should let the scenes sort of run their course and see what happens sort of organically.

Organic is good. So much depends on what the circumstances require. I don't "hear" Ken and Dave -- it even sounds odd when their bimbos-of-the-week call them that. It might be fun to play with the awkwardness. "Write what you know" and all that.

I'm sure you'll make it work.

I agree that I can't hear it either, from my Starsky and Hutch place. But I can't hear, from my MFU place, Napoleon and Illya calling them Starsky and Hutch. Hutch maybe, but "Starsky"? It just doesn't fit NS&IK. Ah, I'll work through it and see what the characters make me do. Best way to do it anyway. Either way will be awkward to some readers, I'm sure. :) That's what I was afraid of, and why I posted the question, and I think I was right - it's going to be a trifle odd either way.

Well, people call Napoleon "Solo," and Illya is "Kuryakin" sometimes, especially within UNCLE. I think they'd be okay with the surnames thing. It's even a British tradition amongst the best of friends, something they might have picked up from Waverly. Oh well -- as I said before, I'm sure you're write what works. You always do!
